BDSM

What is BDSM?

BDSM means Bondage, Discipline, Sadism, and Masochism and refers to a variety of sexual practices involving power dynamics and humiliation. BDSM is favored, for example, for people who like dominant/submissive roleplay, view pain as a form of pleasure, or simply enjoy a light smack in the butt!

Types of BDSM

While BDSM is a broad umbrella term referring to many closely related sexual activities, it can be categorized into different types:

  • Bondage: Based on restricting a partner’s movement;
  • Dominance: Asserting authority over a partner in sexual and non-sexual contexts;
  • Submission: Being obedient and sometimes humiliated by a partner;
  • Sadism and Masochism: Deriving pleasure from inflicting or receiving physical and emotional pain.

In most BDSM roleplays, there’s a top/bottom dynamic in which one of the people involved acts as dominant and the other acts as submissive. In BDSM, “switch” is the name given to a person who is happy to alternate between the two roles.

Getting tied up and being restricted is lots of fun if you’re into BDSM!

What Do You Need for BDSM?

Fundamentally, you need to have a partner whom you can trust and who’s also into BDSM. If you’re a dominant person only, try to find a submissive partner (and vice-versa).

Proper BDSM will also require some equipment, which may include everything from ropes and straps to ball gags designed to restrict speech.

Because things can get hot and steamy very quickly during a BDSM session, it’s also vital to decide on a safeword beforehand.
